For instance, the protracted political debates of the founding fathers was absolutely necessary. Without opposing viewpoints, there is no way to truly test out one's own beliefs or methods, and ensure that they are either absolutely sound, or perhaps need to be adjusted. Compromises needed to be made in order to reach the best possible solution for the needs of our society.
On some occasions, however compromise is not necessary. One's religious convictions ought not be compromised, but I am still firm that without some kind of resistance or broadening, it is difficult to become as firm as one is able, without an awareness, of what one is up against. For instance, in a class, we discussed an article on abortion. It was tactful, but honest (which I loved) and it truly brought people to realizations and strengthened their views. What's more, is that each of us now have a more valid and less ignorant view on the subject. You can't build muscle without some kind of resistance. Similarly, you can't reach your full potential, be it in your beliefs, your physical condition, your intelligence, or the state of your nation without something to stretch you and as a result make you even stronger than before.
