Slightly concerned

So, I check hannah's blog, oh - daily. [She's in Paris and does lots of great things, so seriously, can you blame me?] And I'm a little worried that I made the wrong decision. Okay, not seriously, but my two favorite posts on her blog have been about moroccan restaurants and mosques. I get such a thrill seeing the intricacy that is just so enchanting.

I'm blown away, and convinced that Paris is just the start of my travels.

Some good info for PAREE!
Basque Country Music Festival, (in Saint-Jean-de-Luz) is one of France's premier music festivals and is situated in one of the country's prettiest small cities.

Piano aux Jacobins (in Toulouse), a festival devoted to classical piano music featuring numerous concerts at the Jacobins cloister.

Feria du Riz or Rice Feria, (in Arles) is a showcase of bullfighting traditions in Southern France. Well after fans leave the arena, the party continues into the night in this lively Provence city. Here, you not only find running of the bulls, but they are also guarded by the lovely Camargue horses.

Paris Techno Parade, (in Paris) is France's second most popular music festival and an ode to techno music. It is part of the Rendez-Vous Electroniques Festival (from September 8-18).

Jazz a Beaune, (in Beaune), a wonderful indulgence on the local Burgundy wines and jazz music. There are also classes offered, both on wine tasting and the jazz masters.

Feria des Vendanges or Grape Harvest Feria, (in Nimes) is another festive bullfighting festival in a city jam-packed with historic attractions.
Sauerkraut Festival, (in Brienne-le-Chateau) is a splendid homage to the Aube region, which produces much of France's sauerkraut annually.

Heralding the Harvest, (in Saint-Emilion) marks the start of the harvest in one of France's key wine-producing areas. The highlights include a mass and a torchlight evening tour of the town.

we all know the name by which the best macarons in paris are known, but what about the man behind that name? it was interesting to read about/see pictures of the man who epitomizes great parisienne cuisine.

Londres

I always knew we were going to London, but we'll be there Monday through Saturday with plenty of free time, and my mind (and stomach) are reeling! Sometimes I feel slightly bad telling all these home-soil-bound people around me that I'm going to Paris, and London, and the Netherlands and Belgium (which for a long time i had to consciously focus on not saying "nelgium" in my excitement to get it out.)

Wow! (Unfortunately all of my eloquence goes right out the window in situations such as these. I guess I'm just trying to transmit my excitement through mere cliches.)

By the way, this is the house from the Parent Trap. When I think of London, that's all that's coming to mind. We may need to do some more research. Holy Crap! Forgive me, but as long as we're using shameful cliches . . .

it feels like summer

I love the tantalizing aura that the seasons claim. For instance today, after an all-nighter at my brother's house (coming home in last night's clothes always gives me a little thrill) I was walking up the stairs to my apartment, caught a big whiff and thought to myself "you know, today feels like summer." It's just funny, and mysterious in a way. Yesterday I was toasting away at peaks, surrounded by scantily-clad mommies and towels and coconut oil, but not until this morning, warm but as nondescript as any other, did it legitimately feel like summer.

And it's the same with spring, you have to smell it, truly smell it before it really counts, no wonder what Phil says. Fall? It's that nippiness in the air. You breathe in and suddenly your breath is caught in the chill. Winter . . . well, that one is more difficult to decipher for this California girl. It think it's in the sky though. I want to say there's a winter sky that proclaims the change. Hmmm, I suppose I'll just have to observe the Paris sky to make any kind of real decision. I love saying stuff like that. I don't say it much, but I think it a lot. I don't think that I believe it's real yet. Obviously looking at my bank account tells me it's real, but still . . .

anyway, image via 13bees - very cute.

After scraping and saving for years

I have $52.98 left in my savings. But the biggest Paris payment is behind me (thanks to un peu d'assistance de mes parents.) Anyway, it's really happening. Rachel is really going to Paris. Rachel is really, really going to Paris. Rachel is going to be really really really broke. But you know what, I have a feeling that this experience will be priceless for me, so really, I'm getting a deal!!!

des crepes

Not necessarily in honor of french cuisine (per se) I whipped up some yummy crepes for lunch. Although I halved the recipe, I ended up with four (and let's be honest - no complaints eh?)
And so for the first two I grilled some tomatoes with evoo and lemon juice and topped it all with basil and feta cheese. Turned out absolutely delicious (as did the photos - yum - the limbs i'd give for naturally great lighting all the time.)
As I still had another two, I decided to allow crepes to live up to their original purpose, which is, to be a mere conduit through which sweet nothings may flow. So I spread a little PB&J on one (you can only see the jam in the photo below, and the raspberry seeds provide a nice point of texture eh?) and then . . .
I had to have one with a bit of chocolate. One could tell how quickly this little dearie was devoured considering i wasn't quick enough to catch anything but the last bite of it. Suffice it to say, I'm hoping this little culinary venture is a mere foreshadowing of things to come.
Oh la la!!!

Paris, 1968

I happened upon these photos here. I adore them, mostly because it's fun to think about how aged my own photos will one day be.Apparently this is illegal now, so sad, but what a fun dare!
Climbing the eiffel tower. Frankly I would like a picture similar to this for myself.
This is what I think I'm most looking forward to. Just meandering the streets, eating something that looks real good.
How beautiful and fresh these are. love em.

Book 'em Dano*

{Okay, and seriously, this has got to be the most adorable image i've encountered regarding my future (temporary) place of residence!}
That's right, after much scouring and scheming, and a call to "Habib" by my trusty travel agent, I snagged a $615 flight à Paris. And, I paid for it. Done and done. I spoke to my mom, and I really like that she said something to the effect of  "Hey, if you don't earn enough money, since you've bought the flight, I guess you can just hang out in Paris." Exactement!

So now, the job is . . . well . . . to get a job. Everyone has been so kind, giving me tips and words of encouragement. The worst part about it, is not the not earning money (which is pretty bad) nor the slight angst of disappointment, but I have so much free time. Dumb huh? Let's just say I haven't been quite as productive with my spare time as I could be, but I'm determined for that to change!

A few interviews.

*Yes, that absolutely was a "hawaii five-o" reference.

Excusez-moi . . .

May I go now? Sometimes I have these moments when I'm eating really good chocolate, or looking at a piece of art that I know is in france, or I just think about being in a foreign country and I just want to hop on a plane and go for a long ride, and then wake up in another country, france si'l vous plait.
Okay, I can stay here. It makes me very sad to think of things winding down around here, but I suppose it's inevitable.
