I've recently started Daisy Miller. It's an engaging story, but the underlying message actually engages me more. It was the habit of Henry James to contrast the unrefined manners of americans with the well-established ideals of European society. I'll admit that I can relate to his feelings. My favorite phrase thus far: she gave him the benefit of her glance. Wouldn't all women be better off if their glances were more beneficial?
